Recently, our office (and most of the offices in our community) converted to fiber optics. It’s touted as the best, most secure and fast. One of the class presentations was done on fiber optics and I was very impressed. So I defended the fiber optic move in our office, even when it went down last week. My point, however, is to illustrate how reliant we are on technology, even for me who personally feels little dependence on it! For nearly six working days, we had no internet access and no network services and it was very difficult to conduct business. Even something as small as printing a document could not be done.
Other tasks that could not be done, that we take for granted are researching on the net, getting up-to-date news information and checking in on friends through various social networks. I didn’t think I was do dependent on this, but in the short (or long…) six days without internet access in our office was indeed difficult! I’m sure once the situation is fixed, all will be ok for a long time (keep my fingers crossed ;-) )
