What appeals to me about Entrepeneurship

There are several characteristics that appeal to me about entrepeneurs. Some are: ability to make decisions and act upon them, making short and long-range plans, looking out for new opportunties, following through on ideas/plans/projects, and talking with people about your business are some that I think are great qualities. I know some entrepreneurs who have worked very hard, put in long hours and were very committed to their business and have seen success. They are few in numbers and this goes along the stats of how many new businesses succeed ~ 80% of businesses fail.

We have seen, too, that being an entrepreneur takes a lot of hard work and committement and on the downside of that is not making money for several years.

Business Plan

The class blog was to talk about business plans and experiences. Well, I've been working on a preliminary version of a business plan for a few months. Needless to say, everyone around me heard me talking about the business plan.

Writing a business plan is almost all consuming, takes much effort and collaboration to put together, but well worth the effort.

I found that most people don't realize what goes into a business plan and because of that, are not too interested. When I got indepth into what I was doing and the intended results of the business plan, this is the point my audience became more interested.

I have yet to develop a marketing plan and a more indepth financial forecast. This should interesting as well. For now, I need a rest from the business plan.

This is the Ugjit Smagnisg Snow Crab vessel, specially built for Listuguj in 2003. It fished two seasons and was dry-docked, as were other snow crab vessels.

With a new Chief, a new Vision (and new money from DFO) we are developing a systematic approach to "Taking Back our Fisheries" and recommissioning the vessels. Of course this takes time and requires diligence and hard work.

As a part of this process, we needed to develop a Business Plan. The best thing about writing the business plan is the opportunity we've had to re-examine and re-evaluate our entire fishery, explore various options available to us and to begin development of a corporate structure. Indeed it has been a challenging writing assignment, as stated in the text on Business Plans - Chapter 6 but well worth the effort. In addition to the what was mentioned in the opening of this paragraph, the business plan will be guiding our business strategy, evaluate the financing and establish operating goals and develop plans. All very essential components in a business plan.

I'm a planner and I'm really enjoying this opportunity to write a business plan. It has definitely hellped me to develop and hone managerial skills, so important for a successful business.

In addition to the tangible positive results of developing the business plan, this process has helped me better understand the industry and to work in a systematic manner to put into action what has been written down on paper.

Chapter 6 was timely chapter to read, it really coincided with my work.

How to Tame your Market Fears

This is a timely article given the volatility in the markets recently. In Europe, they have officially entered recession. How much longer before North America declares we are in recession? How and what will the new President-elect do to avert recession? Will recession hit us in Canada? What will it mean to my day-to-day living? These are but just a few questions most people ~ at least those following the news will ask.

I, personally, have never fully understood the market, have never followed it and rarely ever read my registered retirement savings plan statement. Well, I've made attempts to try to know it, read up on it and take interest in my plan. It seems the only time I notice it is when I've lost some money! Of course, when we lose money, we never see our Brokers, they only come to visit when we've made money.

So, I thought, I read the article on "How to Tame Your Market Fears" hoping to learn something new. The article had some good advice on how to invest, how to stay positive - even during this market turmoil and more importantly, where to invest.

I like the term: it's a destination not a journey! For sure, as you set your goals, this is what you have to keep your eye on, not on the day-to-day highs and lows (more lows these days). As the article states, it will cause you unnecessary anxiety which may result in knee-jerk reactions such as selling. Selling when it hits a low will more than likely cause you to lose money. As the article reminds us, focus on the big goal!

It's probably weird to some people right now, but i recently bought some Mutual Funds, on the advice of my Bank. This is my slow entry into the world of Markets, i know little, but that's ok. I will learn as I go along, and hopefully, I won't lose (too) much money.

Aboriginal Woman In Business

We recently made a list of all businesses in Listuguj and we were pleasantly surprised that there was quite a number of women heading these businesses. Some of the businesses include: Grocery Stores, Delivery Service, Bus Transportation, Estetics, and Craft Stores. Additionally, many Listuguj Mi'gmaq Government Departments are headed by women. It's just amazing the incredible role our Mi'gmaq Women have taken in Listuguj! Of course I include myself on that list, along with the other ladies in this course and the Bachelor of Education Program.

The class lecture several weeks ago indicated barriers women face in business and one of them being education. I believe it to be true that generally women have more education than men who are in business. I see this in my community, in the courses, workshops, professional development and meetings have higher participation rates than our male counterparts. Yet the men earn more money, and some women make the same as men, but women are working harder and have more responsibility. Women must prove themselves more than their male counterparts.

One woman, I feel, who has contributed to Listuguj's growth and development is Brenda Gideon-Miller. Mrs. Gideon-Miller was a Band Councillor and Band Manager prior to being elected the first female Chief. As Chief, she initiated the return of traditional pow wows, wabenaki confedercy and no tolerance with alcohol in the workplace, in community gatherings and in public events. She often spoke from the heart, and being a women, got emotional. She was often criticised for this. She worked, and continues to work hard to pursue aboriginal treaty rights, pressing the government and other businesses to adhere to the "duty to consult" and "accomodation". Since these environments are traditionally male-dominated, especially in the negotiating sector, she must face many of the barriers faced by aboriginal women in business. I am proud that she is at the helm of an organization that continually fights for our rights as Aboriginals and she hasn't given up in the face of adversity. She is a true leader and must be commended for her work!

Welugen Brenda!

What does it mean to be Professional?

In my opinion, being professional means having a good work ethic, integrity, competence, high standards and with a good solid educational background. People who are professional can work independently and creativly and make sound judgement decisions. Their work involves mental and administrative work as opposed to manual labor. Thus they produce high quality work.

As students, we strive for the same characteristics, and so young people who are students are becoming professionals early in their careers.

Professionals take their responsibilities seriously and can usually be relied upon to move to the next level of work required without prompting.

TCanada's Native Issue a Taboo?

Isn't it? The article examines the notion that Canada's native issue is a taboo, possibily resulting from victimization.

Victimization, you say? Are we victims, have been victims and why do we continue, then, to act like victims. Is it a role we've become accostumed to playing, that we feel more comfortable or are we really still being victimized?

The latter, I believe, continues to occur to a certain extent. I have been witness to situations whereby, as Natives, we have been taken advantage of or exploited. Take for example out tax ememption status. How often have we ben asked to use our status card for exemption of taxes for the benefit of our non-native friends? How often have we seen our Band Councils and/or employees being taken unfair advantage of with services purchased from non-natives? All too often. Is this a result of our "being taken unfar advatange" or our lack of thoroughly checking out creditentials, etc.?

Updating Blog

Generally, I do not chat, therefore, I'm not accustomed to "chat" style writing. I usually make every effort to write in a business-style professional manner and this is the direction I took when writing in my blog.

I believe that your writing style and what you write says a lot about you as an individual. You never know who is reading what you write, where they are reading it, and why. The way you write becomes a habit, so why not develop a good one!

Additionally, I'm very careful about the kinds of pictures I put out about myself and my family. On this particular blog site, I haven't put up any pictures, for lack of time I guess. But I recently changed my profile picture to one that is more professional looking.

Blogs are meant to be little everyday snippits of information, whatever caught your attention that day, and as means of communtiy, albeit, one-way. You're in control of all the information and can set your privacy accordingly. This is a very idea, given the recent article on "who's googling you?".

I hope you have enjoyed reading some of my postings and I welcome any comments and feedback.

Till the next time, Ap Nemultes!

Selling Native American Soul Article

Commercialization of religious experience is not unique to our society or era......rise of interest in Native Spirituality.

This type of commercialization has ben ongoing for many many years. Who is to blame? Non-native or native people? I think that both are at fault. However, as Natives, we can become very indignant when faced with it and either snicker, get angry, feel insulted among other feelings are usually conjured up.

There was a time, in Canada anyway, that it was not cool to be Indian. In fact, for many of us, we tried to deny who we were, try to look like someone else, act like someone else and not have anything to do with our culture. This was the perfect recipe to being "messed up".

And then, as the healing movement was spreading across the land, and the desire to be "natural" and "holistic" had many people coming forward with native spirituality and teachings. Dreamcatchers are being displayed everywhere, as are other items depicting Indian-ness. Mainstream society is engaging in all sorts of native traditional ceremonies, they are so hungy for everything and anything that is Native. Perhaps they are hoping that it will make them well. They are kewl buzz words: "to be well", "our people are well people", "diversity", etc. All this continues to contribute to the Selling of the Native American Soul.

Again, as Natives, we are left with having to defend ourselves, set the record straight and trying to right the wrongs of stereotyping. It becomes an insurmountable task, because we find ourselves at times, fighting against our own people taking advantage of us and exploiting us, just like the non-native people.

I, for one, can firmly say that I do not condone it. When I see or hear someone using our culture to exploit, it angers me.

Clarification

I was reading my previous blogs and I hope people didn't get the wrong idea when I said I would have get my voice heard over the men.

What I meant was that I would find a way to have my voice heard, and doing this in a respectful way and with integrity. Lately, I've been hearing so many accusations about who is doing what to the other and so on. Really, I think it borders somewhat on petty, but I feel that people are trying hard to assert themselves and each is trying to defend themselves that it becomes hot and bitter. I work hard at not getting into the content of the situation, not getting into the middle of it and not picking sides (factionalism, again!). I am making an effort to be objective and neutral, approaching each situation with an open mind and being positive.

There are so many needs in our community: jobs, housing and fair wages just to name a few. The community needs are greater than the LMG's resources. Then we have to content with many people who feel they haven't had a fair chance - due to differing political views. On top of that, we (and I mean everyone including community members and politicians) have to content with our elected Chief not having majority council. Does this really matter? For some, it does and others, it doens't. Depending on which side of the fence you are on. I recently told the Chief, now you will have a chance to really hone your leadership skills. The Chief and the Band Administrator have to really work hard to come to negotiated agreements, real collaboration at work and settling their differences. I wish them all well.

I'm new and I am still looking forward to the challenge of leading our community. I look forward to comments and suggestions. Please don't hesitate to post.

Thanks

This English Class

This English class have been so interesting and engaging. I really looked forward to attending each class and I feel that I've gotten to know some other students a little bit. Thank you Gail for providing us the opportunity to think, analyze, converse and learn in environment that was open, non-judgemental and positive.

Each Class Blog that was written was done after researching topic and gaining a better understanding of the issue. For example, I got so out of touch with Residential School Survivors after my husband finished his contract, that I didn't realize there was still another initiative, Truth and Reconciliation. Concerning the Apology, we had such an emotional debate, we needed a few minutes to take a breather. I look at this not as negative, but as extremely positive, because we had such a great discussion on the issue which brought about many feelings.

Who would have thought that re-learning grammer rules would be so interesting!

Women in Politics

Ok, so I'm new to politics in Listuguj! Well, not entirely. I've always been somewhat political; I've cetainly had my views of a number of topics and have participated in standoffs, blockades, sit-ins and demonostrations. I've participated as a community member, as a woman, a parent, and as a worker. I've been a member of a Union which helped organize our workforce, have sat on several boards and participated with other women on issues of concern. Yes, all these examples certainly qualify me as being political.

A few weeks ago I was elected to Council. I feel truly honored and hope that I will meet community members expectations! And they're big ones too!

And so, I attended my first Council meeting. Very interesting. However, I am surprised that as much as the community wanted women on council, and some of these councillors said the same thing, they are not living it. As mentioned in my previous blog, factionalism is alive and well in Listuguj and furthermore, our council chambers is male dominated. I will need to work on this in the next two years. I believe, this means that I will have to speak up and make my voice heard - over the men!

Factionalism In Listuguj?

Listuguj recently held their elections to elect a Chief and 12 Councillors. Throughout the process, many community members voiced their concerns regarding the perceived "factionalism" in Listuguj. I've been thinking about this and have done some research on the topic so that I can have a better understanding of this term "factionalsim". This is what I found out; however, it is by no means exhaustive.

Factionalsim is a conflict between parties vying for political power or control. Moreover, it is used for historical or political power. This seems to be the case in Listuguj. One could say there are two factions in our "community" each represented by a group of families. This side or that side, if you want. It is difficult to be neutral in Listuguj. Indeed, our community is so political, but then again, aren't we as Native people, political the moment we are born?

Another definition I came across is two value systems that are opposed to one another fundamentally. One is rooted in traditional teachings, structures social and cultural relations; the other, imposed by the colonial state, structures politics. The latter's intent has always had the intention to destroy the native people.

Until we can come together in a cohesive group, to rebuild our sense of togetherness and squash factionalsim it will be difficult to build a common vision and perspective. We need real willingness to work along those lines, but factionalism stands in the way.

Busy Month

I'm back after a very busy month! And it's timely that I'm back, since this is the last week of class. It's been a great course and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I might not have blogged regularly nor had I posted my answers to the class blogs (until the other night), but I managed to make it to all the classes except one. And unfortunately, I will be missing the last class as well.

What has been keeping me busy you ask? Well, firstly my kids. They always come first and I ensure to attend all their activities and any other special events in their lives. My youngest daughter had her year-end dance show, which is a weekend-long affair. Thank God Dance is over!!

Next was the year-end synchro water show and I was so happy that ended on a postive note. Our small Sycnhro Club had a difficult year and we were lucky enough to make it to the Provincial Competition and end the year with a water show!

And admist all those activities, our community held it's election! As if I'm not busy enough, I decided to run for Council and I'm very happy and hnonored that I was elected! Being a Band Councillor will certainly be a challenge!

It's that time again in Listuguj!

Yes, it's that time again, election time! Our community members are so confused by it, angery at it, apprehensive, excited, cool and of course the seasoned politicians are smooth!

As for me, I'm a candidate for Council - my first time. Someone I spoke to tonight said "call yourself a virgin" it breaks the ice real good, causes laughter. He suggested this because he too is a first-time candidate and this is his opener. I just might try it.

Since embarking on this journey, I've had to challenge myself. I try to approach many things in my life as challenges, and because I'm competitive by nature, it helps me, or rather encourages me to face them in order to get over them. I've had to face two challenges since beginning: the first one is to walk up to people and start a conversation (I'm an introvert, so this is a major step!); and I spoke to a crowd of people in my language! I don't normally speak Mi'gmaq, however, most people will speak to me in Mi'gmaq; I respond in English. It's been a real experience so far.

Back to Blogging...

Well, I'm back! I kind of missed this, in a strange kind of way. I thought of setting up another blog, or continuing on this one. I just wasn't sure and as with anything else, if I let it be, the answers always come. And it sure did. I don't know why I didn't put two and two together and come to the conclusion that this course would continue in the same fashion as the last two.

I've gotten into reading different blogs too. Yoga blogs, news blogs, etc. Quite interesting. For the simple reason that, I believe, you're reading someone else's thoughts and opinions, most of the time. There are those professional blogs too, that are maintained by profesiona bloggers. In this instance, you get a deeper meaning of the subject matter and if read further, you obtain a wider view of the subject.

So, here's to Blogging. Happy blogging to everyone in this English class!

The Blackberry

Ok, so finally caved in and bought a Blackberry. I resisted for as long as I could, but digital diluge got the best of me! I had been a devoted Palm user for many years, having gone through several palms, my last being a LIfedrive. My poor Lifedrive, and I really liked it too. It could play my music, load my pictures, had documents to go (important for me), and I could go on line with its wireless feature. Then it died. In less than a year. I think it was just a melon anyway! My supplier hates the Palm, so he was more than happy to replace it with the Blackberry.

Then I had a hard time deciding which Blackberry to get. The Curve, The Pearl, and the numbered ones... 8800, 8830, etfc.... Finally, I got advice for another who does a lot of the same organizing I do and this is how I decided (the final push) which Blackberry I would get. The World!

And now, as I've evolved in the digital era complete with a Blackberry. Now I can receive my work emails all day and all evening long, I can respond immediately, I can be on MSN, Facebook, of course I can still receive phone calls and text messaging. Haha, I find this all too amusing! How quickly I have changed to only usng the comptuer for work purposes to being on the computer all the day, getting home and slapping my laptop on the table (my husband whas just complainging this evening that we no longer had a table!)and checking what is going on.

Ahhh... the laptop, the Blackberry, what have I become!!!!

Blogging

Blogging began sometime around 1994 as sometimes nutty, sometimes inspired writings of on-line dairies. Among the many blogs there are really interesting ones such as news blogs, commentary blogs on a whole slew of topics, parenting, technology, and any topic your mind can conceive.

Recently, it has become increasingly competitive where professional bloggers are under extreme pressure to be the first to report on, for example a blog on technology, the newest and more latest gadget. News and Commentary Blogs are just as competitive. One recent report I read on a blog no less, reported on a bloggger who blogged to death. There was no real conclusive medical evidence but it appears because of the extreme stress he was under caused him to have a heart attack (or maybe his poor diet, sedetary lifestyle, lack of sleep, etc....). In his same article, another Blogger blogs constantly and requires very little sleep. When his editor doesn't receive a post from him in a few hours, he figures he's fallen asleep at the computer (from sheer exhaustion!)

Another reason for bloggings intensity is of course, money. Bloggers are paid in various ways, such as how many times they are read and perhaps how many blogs they write. This definitely increases the pressure for Bloggers to be interesting, imaginative, informative all in the effort to capture the reader.

Unbelieveable! But harder to believe is that Me, who rarely went surfing the net, used the computer for work purposes the majority of the time, rarely chatted is now constantly on-line... which I will tell you more about in the next blog!

Here's two blogs I thought were interesting:

Web 2.0

Very interesting! I've never spent so much time on the internet as I have now, since researching various sites and figuring out what all this Web 2.0 is about. I was just amazed as I clicked here and clicked there and came upon information.

Indeed I am finding out what all the fuss is about. First it started with Facebook. I kind of sort of reluctantly joined. Even more reluctantly invited friends, they invited me and still I was unsure about certain applications. The more I used it, the more I found I liked it. I could connect with Friends, old and new! I could keep up-to-date with friends and family and know what is going around me in my community.

Other tools I discovered were: Flickr ( I posted my new car!); Blogging; wikispaces; avitars, etc. Yes, it's been very interesting and I'm looking forward to more searching and learning.

What are the two types of business threats? Give an example of each.

1. Surveillance of Employees

Employers can use social networking sites to spy on employees or gather information on potential employees.

2. Use of business-related information, including transaction.

Whenever you purchase merchandise on lne, through a credit card or use a cheque in a store, the business has your information and can use that information to solicit your business. Another threat is a loop-hole in the system where there are ads placed on the site you visit and these ad company can have information diverted to their site so they know where you've been (which site you've visited).

Which do you worry about more - government of business - when it comes to collecting and managing your personal information?

I would tend to worry more about business managing my personal information, and more specifically, what that business will do with my information. With identiy theft on the rise, I am always concerned how my personal information can be used. You never know who has it, what they will do with it and as a result, how it can destory/devastate your life. Many times I feel like I'm taking a gamble when I go to certain sites and leaving "my footprint", or when purchasing something on line. I am still leary about that.

Email

Do you enjoy using email as a communication/conversation tool? Are you able to adequately convey meaning?

I like using email for business related activities. It's easier, faster and can obtain answers quickly. It also provides a great tracking system and documentation of certain decisions. When collaborating with collegues on certain projects, getting a written confirmation can be invaluable. However, there are some instances that email cannot be used and a face-to-face meeting needs to happen or a simple phone call. One needs to know how to descern the other so that you can be an effective person.

On a personal level, I can keep in touch with friends who live away, my daughter who lives away and I recently discovered emailing my children's teachers is very handy indeed! With the use of Facebook and it's email feature, I can organize groups, check friends and get caught up all in one program. Most times, I feel that I am able to convey meaning in the message. For anything that is very serious, I will use the telephone or go see the person.

Note one element of "netiquette" that you learned in the reading. Answering a backlog of email in reverse. I never thought of that! I usually go to the oldest and work to the most recent, but it makes more sense to go in reverse.
Add another element to the netiquette list in the textbook. I occassionally use only the subject line for my message, especially if the message is short, i.e., mtg at 3p.m eom (end of message - so the reader doesn't have to open the email...)

Our Fiber Optic

I know, I've written about this already! I'm really getting annoyed now, because this new technology is supposed to be better, faster and more reliable! But this is not the case in our community. I'm not sure what happened, who was spear-heading the project and how we got shafted in the process. Well, shafted is how I'm feeling. We are just learning that our fiber optic will not be put to full capacity, and we're operating at 25% of its capability. This is not good. Our technology class is more than likely the first feel the effects of not operating at full capacity.

Although I quickly skimmed the latest class blog on "The Need for Speed", I can feel for the Navajo community that may not have high speed access in their vast territory. Is it just me, or is it that natives usually get the raw end of the deal?? Must look further into this, and our own deal with the fiber optics.

Mac or PC

Needless to say I was pleased to come across this article in our text. Lately, this has been the question, and many arguements have been made, beginning with my kids. My daugther is an avid Mac user and often snickers at our PC and goes on and on about how much better the Mac is. My Son has joined the Mac craze recently, through his digital tech class and is now saving up to buy himself a Mac. Most Mac users feel the same ~ Mac Lovers. Rarely do I meet another who is not a Mac fan. Other than a fellow collaborator of mine, a business-minded person no less, perfers to use a PC, because PC's have better business capabilities and most of his associates are PC's users. Ahhh, more relief when I heard that.

The text, too, goes on to say the arguement is pointless, and that in fact, the two systems "are more alike than they are different". (page. 34)

So, I'm happy with my PC till......

My Daughter's Edu-Portfolio

My 10-year old Daughter's Grade 5 French immersion class recently began using edu-portfolios in their class. This new technology allows them to easily set up a portfolio, view others in their class and design as they wish. It's interactive, exchange is simple, visually appealing, is protected, teletransportable and potentially sociaconstructivist. Users include grade school to university, teachers at all levels, administrators and everyone in between.

For more information on this new technology, you can go to eduportfolio.org and learn more about it. I think this new technology is great for our students, they are learning differently that we did, using a new concept social-constructivist. This perspective emphasizes the impact of collaboration, social context and negotiation on thinking and learning. Social-constructivist perspective is inclusion of community and what the Grade 5 French Immersion class has done is created their own little community on the web!

Very interesting indeed! I look forward to reading what she is posting and how she, and her fellow classmates will be designing the site.

When the connection is lost!

Recently, our office (and most of the offices in our community) converted to fiber optics. It’s touted as the best, most secure and fast. One of the class presentations was done on fiber optics and I was very impressed. So I defended the fiber optic move in our office, even when it went down last week. My point, however, is to illustrate how reliant we are on technology, even for me who personally feels little dependence on it! For nearly six working days, we had no internet access and no network services and it was very difficult to conduct business. Even something as small as printing a document could not be done.

Other tasks that could not be done, that we take for granted are researching on the net, getting up-to-date news information and checking in on friends through various social networks. I didn’t think I was do dependent on this, but in the short (or long…) six days without internet access in our office was indeed difficult! I’m sure once the situation is fixed, all will be ok for a long time (keep my fingers crossed ;-) )

Isn't Technology Great!

Wow, isn't it just great! Until it doesn't work.... like tonight! I came to the class fully intending to watch my fellow classmates around the province make their presentations, but to my dismay, we couldn't connect on the polycom. So at this point, we're not sure if anyone made their presentations.

So, in view of those of us in Listuguj who couldn't not connect, we made use of the class time and helped one of our classmates with her blog. I'm glad I started bringing my laptop ~ it's become very handy.

Good luck to everyone on their presentations and I'll save some for my group too :-) Del

I'm short on Time

So, I guess the post gets saved as your writing, but when you log out it gets lost! Now I have to start over, and all I was talking about was how I needed more time. More time to do all the things I want to do, but alas, I didn't learn the lesson yet! Anyway, what is time?? If I had more time, I would just do more things, because that's the way I am. It's the same as wanting more money, once we have more, we spend more and find ourselves in the same perdictament! So back to my being short on time and how does this affects technology!

Well, lately, it seems I'm doing some things twice, like this blog!

Last week's class on photography and digital storytelling was quite interesting. I love to take pictures and received a really nice digital canon rebel for Christmas. I'm still learning how to use it. But, what caught my interest was telling a story with pictures and using MS Office Picture Manager. So, people near and dear to me will know what I did. I went straight home and tried it out! And those that know me, know that I'd jump right into trying to do, getting fustrated because it wasn't working the way I wanted it, or the way its supposed to...arrggghhh.. Did I even bother to check my notes, ask for help or take a breather? Of course not! So because I'm always so pressed for time, I just left it be. Figured that I would keep trying another time. Besides, I really wanted to add it to this comment.

It was only at Monday's class that I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was using the wrong program - the Moviemaker!

Ok, Del, just slow down, read the notes and do the work. Simple....

Assistive Technology

Lately, I've been thinking about a past co-worker. My co-worker was very up-to-date on all the latest technology. I think he may be one of the first people around who was on the internet! I remember us having a conversation about about this one day, he was trying to encourage me to "surf the net", how easy it was and so on. And this was only about 14 years ago, I'm not sure if we even had a computer in our home. Besides my co-worker's knowledge of the net at the time, we was legally blind, but that didn't hinder him any way! He was successful in gaining funding to purchase a talking computer which assisted him in his many tasks. I'm sure this made his internet surfing much easier. Not only did he use his computer for surfing, he did everything on it, and it certainly asissted him with his writing. He truly was ahead of his time and he is a fine example of how assistive technology can be really beneficial.

I WebExed Today!

That's too funny! I'm making up a new language through the internet and the various things I do throughout the day. Today, I was invited to join a meeting through the internet, using WebEx. I thought it was very cool AND it was very simple to do. If I had a microphone set up and a webcam, I could have used this experience to its full potential, but since I'm a "digital immigrant" I am moving along slowly - but surely! After joining the meeting, we all engaged using the telephone and went on with our 1.5 hour meeting.

I haven't been in this course for very long, but the single biggest thing I've achieved thus far is that I am definitely more conscious of technology and wanting to read as much as I can. When I am reading my headlines for the day, that come in through my RSS feed, I make sure to check technology news. I never did that before, nor did pay any attention to what was going on around me technology wise - until now. For that, I am grateful for today!

News Article of the Day

A news article today spoke about new technology currently being developed that will enable us to scan our cheques and deposit them into our bank accounts. It further went on to comment how we may not need to go the bank anymore. Imagine! Well, I hardly every go to the bank anyway. The anchor is waiting for the technology that will output money from the computer! Yeah, now that's technology worth waiting for!

I'm learning along with my kids

The great thing about this course is that it will encourage me to explore technology as I come upon it. My son is taking a digital technology course in high school and although is an avid gamer and likes utube, he doesn't generally poke around the computer or anywhere on the net for that matter. The digitial tech course is teaching Macromedia Fireworks. Wow, what a program! I have no clue where or how to start, so I suggested to him to bring his assignments and we could figure them out together! Should be fun exploring this program and learning more about it, how it can be used at home and at work.

Hi

Hi, and welcome to my space. Glad you dropped by and hope that you enjoy your visit. This space or place, now I'm already getting it all mixed up .. will be for sharing what I, as a student of the First Nation Business Administration Certificate, will be learning from the computer course - our first in the lineup of courses. I'm excited to be embarking on a new journey of learning, with friends and co-workers, and new friends to meet too!

Blogging is a new experience for me. I've only been on Facebook for a short time and I don't really care for MSN, but have been caught on it on several occassions. I guess I'm still "old school" and reserve computers for work purposes only but will soon be learning lots of fun new things to do, such as Blogging. So, stay tuned!
